FinCas - Cal/Val site

The Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), part of the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS), and Terramonitor have launched the FinCas project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). The aim of the project is to define satellite data calibration and validation (cal/val) site requirements for future. The project has just begun and will run until the end of 2026.

FinCas, short for Finnish Calibration Site, aims to investigate the requirements for calibrating high-precision optical satellite images, and to assess the feasibility of establishing an operational calibration site for satellite imagery in Finland in the future.

The project will utilise the Sjökulla calibration site, operated by FGI, which is currently used for aerial and drone-based imaging, as well as instruments at the Metsähovi Geodetic Research Station in Kirkkonummi. As part of the project, the Sjökulla site will be further developed to better meet the needs of satellite calibration. This includes upgrading and modifying the gravel areas of the calibration field to make them more suitable for satellite imaging.

"This development project supports Finland's space strategy and the New Space ecosystem. In the future, the site will contribute to Finland's strategic goal of becoming a leading player in the space sector," says Joni Norppa, CEO of Terramonitor.

Terramonitor is responsible for stakeholder collobration and piloting the technical process of satellite image calibration at Sjökulla as part of the project.
